Winter is just around the corner, and it is time to start preparing. Many lawn care contractors moonlight as snow removal contractors in the “off” season. As the heat takes a toll on lawns, and mowing slows down, take a break to prepare for what the upcoming months could bring.
Do not wait until the first storm to check out your equipment. Get your snow removal equipment out and test it now. Hook up your plows, and make sure everything works. If they need some work, get them to your local shop to get the work done. Don’t forget about your salt spreaders, brine sprayers, and snow blowers too. The last thing you, or your customers need is to get caught in an unexpected storm, unprepared.
We recommend flushing the system at the beginning of the season to make sure it will last you through the winter. The hydraulic oil in snow plows have an anti-icing agent in them to help them when the temps dip really low, but over time, condensation can get into those lines and freeze them up. Also, check for wires that may have been chewed on by critters, or damaged in other storms from debris if your snow removal equipment was kept outside.
Salt and brine can wreck havoc on all of your equipment, trucks included. So make sure you do some general maintenance throughout the season and before you store it next spring. Snow equipment is not easy on the wallet to replace. Make sure that you take care of it so you can make an excellent return on your investment. Remember, check over everything before the storms start rolling in, and everyone can have a happy and successful winter.
