Summer’s winding down; are you gearing up for college yet? Don’t let moving be a drag. Follow these tips to make moving into your tiny dorm room less daunting.
#1. Size matters. It’s time to get real. The size of your apartment or dorm is usually smaller than you imagine, especially if you have a roommate. If packing light and going shopping after you get there isn’t an option, good luck cramming everything into your car. Maybe you should rent a trailer to haul your stuff? Wait; don’t rent one! You’ll need that trailer year after year! A small cargo or utility trailer would be perfect to move you in and out of college.
#2. Coordinate your kegs cups. Communicate with your roomies to make sure you’re not going to end up with three fondue pots. A few bean bag chairs or couches may come in handy, but who really needs two vacuums? And if you’re moving couches, that utility trailer will really be handy.
#3. Don’t pop your bubble. Skip the bubble wrap, packing peanuts, and dirty newspaper. Just use blankets, sheets, and clothing as padding. You’ll cut waste and save space.
#4. Save the c-notes. College is hard and your stuff takes a beating too. Couches will get spilt on. Dishes will break. Hit the thrift store and pick up some gently used furniture or kitchen goods. You’ll avoid those big-box prices, while getting to tap into your creative or retro-hipster side. You might even score a funky shirt for one of those themed parties.
#5. Skip the truck. Avoid a last minute panic attack and go get a trailer. You don’t want to get stuck with having to rent a monster-sized semi because that’s all that’s left on the lot. Or overloading dad’s truck, filling mom’s minivan and still stuffing your car too. Get a cargo or utility trailer and load it at your leisure. You won’t have to worry about renting anything or having enough room when you move home in May either. Think of all the fun things to do with a trailer too – camping, towing atv’s, hauling wood for campfires, homecoming floats. Ok, the parents may have to approve of the last one.
#6: Pack a back to college bag. So, after you move everything in, you’ll probably not unpack it all. You’ll be itching to go see your friends and crack open a cold one. Need a change of clothes, toothbrush, etc? No problem! Pack a travel bag filled with necessities like a toothbrush and change of clothes. College is back in session. Be prepared for anything!
