Are you having trouble with your salt spreader this year? It doesn’t matter what the name brand is, here are some valuable tips when diagnosing spreader trouble. Keep the following information in the back of your mind when checking your equipment for the next storm.
Service Tip: Old Spreading Material Can Cause Flow Issues with Your Spreader
If you are having problems with the material output from your spreader or with the evenness of the material flow; check your salt. It could be the cause – not your equipment.
Tips for Optimum Material Flow:
CHECK YOUR MATERIAL FIRST!!!
Is the material you are using left over from last year or is it fresh? Old material, left over from the mild winter we had last year has taken on moisture, will clump, compact and bind – causing material to bridge over the auger and inhibit flow. Check your salt, sand and start off the job with fresh material for optimum flow.
Is it the material saturated? Replace or mix with fresh salt before starting up the spreader. Have you recently used the spreader at temps above freezing? Crystallization of the moisture will not occur to facilitate material flow, blend in fresh salt to loosen it up.
