Summer is winding down, the weather is getting cooler, and the daylight hours shorter, this can mean only one thing. Winter will be here in no time, and who knows what Mother Nature will throw our way. Here in PA, winters can go either way. Crazy storms or not much at all. The past few years MD and VA have been hit with more storms than we have. But that doesn’t mean you should let your guard down. As the saying goes here in PA, “If you don’t like the weather now, just wait 5 minutes”.
So lets talk snow and ice for a little bit. When winter brings on her worst, we need to be ready for it. Whether it be a huge snow storm with great accumulation, or a few inches of ice, either way, it needs to be taken care of. If you are in the snow removeal business, you know what I mean. Hazardous conditions are not good for our customers business’. We need to be ready at a moments notice to get everyone plowed, salted, and cleared up right away.
Now is the time to start checking your equipment for the winter. Hook up your snow plow. Test all the functions, make sure everything is in working order. That way you are ready to plow at a moments notice. If you are upgrading equipment this season, be sure that your old plow is compatible with the new truck. Another thing to consider is adding trucks to your fleet. It is possible to have just one plow and multiple trucks that can operate it. This is great to consider in case something happens to your main plow truck.
Salt spreaders need service too. Salt wrecks havoc on the spinner plate, motors, and electrical components. Make sure that you empty and clean all parts when you are done for the season. This will help ensure a longer life of your equipment. Test them out, keep them clean. Remember, you don’t always get a heads up when a storm rolls in.
Now is the time to check all your winter snow and ice removeal equipment out. Don’t wait until the snow falls. Get ahead of the game and service everything now.
Until next time…….think snow!
